DESIGN STRATEGY FOR HEALTHCARE TRANSFORMATION

As a senior creative strategist adviser with Indigo Slate’s Human experience Innovation Studio, I lead design thinking workshops for Microsoft’s diverse industry partners in Health Care. I design and facilitate envisioning workshops for Microsoft Catalyst team, a customer engagement journey that Microsoft and their partners use to help organizations conceive and realize business transformation.

CHALLENGE:

How might we empower the next generation of innovators to collaborate and create a sustainable future?

SOLUTION:

I advise on the overall strategy of the product direction by guiding young innovators through a co- creation process to support their design journey. The second phase of the facilitation process focused on mentorship on how to tell a compelling story of their creation by refining their storytelling around product offering. The third phase of the facilitation was creating connected experiences that are inspiring in the Bay Area startup ecosystem.

IMPACT:

• As a direct result of this mentorship and collaboration the innovator teams were able to navigate emerging design and business methodologies that are best aligned with the Swissnex launch program and connected with the Bay Area startup Ecosystem.

DESIGN EDUCATION FOR CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The Social Impact and Sustainability studio was designed and facilitated by Başak Altan for CCA Industrial Design Department. The goal of the studio was to create tangible design solutions while focusing on facilitating social change for the circular economy. The first half of the studio exposed the students to examples of sustainable frameworks within the context of designing for a circular economy, in the latter half of the studio students worked on team projects using practical tools and techniques for identifying issues, developing solutions, troubleshooting problems in their designs.design research and human-centered design mindset and methods.

The overarching goals of the studio were threefold:

1. The course covered fundamentals of designing for a circular economy, sustainability and social impact by building an understanding, awareness, and comfort using sustainability criteria and frameworks.

2. To design resilient, long-lasting value driven experiences that are restorative by design. The students were tasked with demonstrating their understanding of the business context that their solutions lived in.

3. To practice team collaboration, presentation, design, and critical thinking skills..Leading sustainability and social impact studios to design for the circular economy.

IMPACT:

Aiming to fostering designers for the circular economy, the design education initiatives taken by Başak Altan, resulted in internationally recognized, pioneering and award-winning product designs by her students. .All of the design teams integrated their findings from the business canvas into their solutions and were able to impress and convince the jurors of the new value in their offerings within the circular economy.

Out of four design teams and two team projects out of the four teams, won awards at the prestigious International Design Awards:

>Team AXO brought home the GOLD award for Social Impact and Designing for society.

>Team O'KO brought home the BRONZE award for Sustainability.

Reimagining Mobility Studio was a collaboration with FORD INNOVATION STUDIO in Palo Alto and educational institutions CCA & Jacobs Innovation Institute. As the lead instructor I co-designed the mentorship and facilitation process guiding the students’ exploratory journey to discover new and connected solutions for a positive future of mobility in urban spaces. As a direct result of this mentorship the id teams were able to navigate emerging design and business methodologies that were best aligned with Ford’s needs. The Ford Team presented the innovative concepts as a part of their strategic initiatives for future of mobility to their headquarters.

CULTURAL RESONANCE THROUGH DESIGN

I partner organizations with educational institutions to provide a co-creation setting for design students. Co-designing is an inclusive process and delivers better alignment with user needs. In these studios, my students co-designed with real clients for activating social and environmental change by co-creating educational tools. In these series of studios the partnerships were with two different schools: The Berkeley Turkish School, and The Berkeley School. The first studio’s goal was to co-create educational tools to teach culture through creativity. The objective of the partnership with The Berkeley School was to co-create educational tools to discover the Native cultures that lived in the Bay Area.

I created a customized design thinking workshop curriculum that included short teachings paired with hands-on activities to meet the goals of our partners.

IMPACT:

• Leading collaborative design studios provided real client experiences for the industrial design students

• The student and teachers were able to take part in design thinking and the co-creating the educational tools they used.

• Created an innovation framework for what it means to design for cultural resonance.
