CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT: IDSA SF CHAPTER, SAN FRANCISCO

SF Chapter which is lead by Basak Altan as the chair had the spotlight for IDSA’s blog. IDSA SF organized many fantastic events in 2019. The year began with a private tour of the Eames Exhibit at Oakland Museum of California, led by Llisa Demetrios, granddaughter of Ray and Charles Eames. In March, a panel discussion at Whipsaw's design studio, "Secret to a Thriving Consultancy," generated honest revelations from top Bay Area founders. In April, the chapter was instrumental in putting together IDSA's sold-out Women in Design Deep Dive 2019 in San Francisco. The local community also flocked to an event at Bould Design in the fall that covered the design journey of the Nest Thermostat, from founding to acquisition. Last but certainly not least, IDSA SF brought back the Annual Bay Area Design Dodgeball Tournament for a 14th year. The game was a smashing success, as design teams across the region enjoyed reconnecting and engaging in friendly competition.

A DESIGN JOURNEY FROM FOUNDING TO ACQUiSITION: IDSA SF CHAPTER, SAN FRANCISCO

Basak Altan’s Article on Linkedin about Great Teams Create Great Things.

“Last night I had the pleasure of moderating an IDSA event, generously hosted by Bould Design at their lovely studio. On the panel were the legends behind the nest thermostat: Fred Bould, Founder and Design Director at Bould Design, Matt Rogers, Co-founder, former Chief Product Officer and VP of Engineering at Nest, Shige Honjo, Former Senior Director, Product Management and Engineering Program Management at Nest, Trae Vassallo, Former General Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

Our conversation explored the inspiring journey and what it took for this team to found and get nest into the market place, the challenges they faced, and how this journey has changed each of them. I have been inspired and have been pondering today with the sound advice from this fantastic panel:

Working and selecting a team you trust and like -Shinge,

Working on projects that matter, that have meaning, ones that solve a problem facing us today-Matt

Thank you for coming, and thank you to all who made this event possible. September 26th, 2019

WOMEN IN DESIGN: IDSA SF CHAPTER, SAN FRANCISCO

Basak Altan’s Article on Linkedin about this fantastic conference.

“It was truly an inspiring weekend for all of us who attended the Women in Design Conference, organized by Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). This amazing gathering was built to celebrate the unique talents, initiatives and challenges of women in the industrial design industry.

The program was packed full of inspiring design leaders. Together we reflected on the women's progress in our industry from Nancy Perkins, reminded about the journeys of "A few" unrecognized women in design from 1930- 70 from Vicki Matranga, Design Programs Coordinator at IHA, participated in the fireside chats with Victoria Slaker of Ammunition and Susanne LeBarre of Fast Company, Nichole Roulliac's perspective on the importance of mentorship programs, and the Creative tensions workshop with Marcelle van Buesekom from IDEO. I thought the Fearless Workshop with Katherine Hargreaves simply amazing, one that every professional should attend. Hearing Shujan Bertran's inspiring story behind aplat, Laura's entertaining but at the same time very important message on Intersectionality, Katie Dill' s brave and authentic journey on designing design and Isabelle Olsson's message on "Design Feeling" from Google wearables was spectacular.

This was a day where we heard voices from the divergent backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. This diversity is also what makes our design community strong so we can make a positive impact in our communities.

Thank you IDSA and all volunteers that made this meaningful day possible for all of us. “May 3rd, 2019
